6 top Italian phrases that make you sound more Italian

July 22, 2016

Today we want to be sophisticated and (why not) we'd like to share with you some beautiful and useful expressions that will make you sound more Italian... Promesso!

1- IN BOCCA AL LUPO!

Translated in english perhaps doesn't really make sense ( In the mouth of the wolf!),  but Italians use this expression to wish good luck!

Esempio: A- Domani ho un esame difficile...     B- ah..Allora in bocca al lupo!

2- SALUTE!

Someone sneezes and you say "Salute!". It means "Health!".

Italians also say "Salute" before they drink a glass of wine or beer with friends. In this case "Salute" means "Cheers".

3-MACCHÈ!

Very interesting and frequent expression!

This word expresses a strong disbelief. It's a decisive way to say "Of course not".

Esempio:  A- Tu sei un bravo attore?        B- Macchè!

4- ACQUA IN BOCCA!

This is another very popular expression, which means "Water in the mouth!"

If you tell a secret to someone, then make sure to remind this person to keep "water in the mouth", so that he can't say it to anybody else.

Esempio:  A- Secondo te Fabio è bello?     B- Si! Ma acqua in bocca.....!

5- BASTA!

This is the most common way to say "Enough!" or "Stop it!"

Esempio: A- Ora vorrei mangiare una pizza....       B- Basta mangiare!

6- ECCOME!

The literal translation means "and how!", however in Italian is used to emphasise the fact that you like something very much or that you do something very often.

Esempio:   A- Ti piace la pasta?         B- Eccome!
